Our Community - Youth

The North Shore Synagogue offers a range of activities for young people to grow, learn and enjoy their leisure time together.

Starting with play group for toddlers to leadership training for teens, the opportunities develop a sense of belonging in a Jewish environment.

We welcome other organisations which hold their meetings and share our facilities.

The North Shore Synagogue offers a wide ranging and interactive Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah programmes.
Under the tutelage of Rabbi Lewin, the Bar Mitzvah student is guided through the Bar Mitzvah journey. Each Tuesday evening during the school term, from 7.15pm to 8.00pm, the boys meet as a group to learn about the basic principles of Judaism, the structure and workings of the synagogue and its services as well as core beliefs. In addition, every Bar Mitzvah boy is rostered on as a Shammash which helps familiarise him with our Shabbat and Yom Tov services, the community, providing them with an active role in the running of the shul service. Our programme is tailored to the ability of each individual student and we work together with qualified Hebrew teachers to assist in their ability to shine on the day.
The girls, under the guidance of Natlie Levy, meet each Tuesday evening during the school term, from 7.15pm to 8.00pm and participate in a fascinating twelve-month course, learning about the basic principles of Judaism, the festivals and how to run a Jewish home. Natalie works closely with each of them to prepare a D’var Torah which is educational and meaningful to the girls, based on a topic covered during the course. During summer months, Bat Mitzvah students are invited to our Friday evening services to light the Shabbat candles.
Bar and Bat Mitzvah students enjoy a Shabbaton as well as group outings – spending time with their peers.
On their special day, the Bar and Bat Mitzvah are celebrated with honor, as the service and sermons are thoughtfully dedicated to them.
At The North Shore Synagogue pride ourselves on providing all Bar and Bat Mitzvah students the perfect gateway to a lifetime of Jewish learning.
Please contact The North Shore Synagogue office on (02) 9416 3710, to discuss booking your child into our programme.

Ha Tzofim- Israeli Scouts

Shevet Shahar is Sydney’s branch of the Israeli scouts in Australia – started off in 2015 with a small group of teenagers from all over Sydney metro area. This group set the first ‘shachbag’ (senior year) undergoing a leadership course and sharing the goal of becoming the leaders of the new Shevet in Sydney.

Since 2016, Shevet Shahar runs Tzofim (scouts) activities in Hebrew, for children from school years 3 to 12, giving them the taste of Israeli youth movement with its non-formal indoor and outdoor activities.

Shevet Shahar meets in the Lower Victor Smiith Hall and grounds of the The North Shore Synagogue in Lindfield and is open to all Hebrew-speaking children and teenagers. Together we experience, learn new skills, connect and celebrate community events.

Shevet Shahar opened the Hebrew Library and a game centre for the community. The Library is open at the same time as the Tzofim activity hours.

Betar
What is Betar?
Betar is a worldwide Zionist Jewish youth movement that was established in 1923 by Ze’ev Jabotinsky. Betar operates across Australia in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, all of which unite for camps each year. In Betar, we strive to create a fun atmosphere for our chanichim, aiding in their social and personal development with high quality role models. We maintain a strong emphasis on core ethical values such as Hadar (every Jew is a Prince and should be treated equally) and Tagar (activism – standing up for what you believe in).

Betar is a cross communal youth movement meaning we strive to cater for all streams of Judaism that our chanichim and madrichim align with. Betar believes strongly in monism thus putting an emphasis on Zionistic education such as Israeli history, culture and contemporary politics.

How can you get involved?

If you are in grades 2-12 and would like to join Betar or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Ariel Berger who is the Mefaked (Director) of Betar Sydney. We are always looking to expand our Betar community and share more experiences with other members of youth!
